Job description

The forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo are overexploited due to illegal logging and poa ching. The project “Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Forest Management” aims to im prove biodiversity protection, sustainable ma nage ment of tropical forests and the economic situation of the local population in selected areas. The new project component “One Health” supports partners in the implementation of the country's vision to strengthen national and local capacities for prevention, detection and response to infectious disease threats affecting both ani mals and humans.

Your tasks

  • Setting up a “One Health” platform on a provin cial level with partner institutions in Maniema and South Kivu in accordance with national guidelines to reduce health risks to animals, humans, and the environment
  • Strengthening surveillance and response capa city for zoonotic diseases, including targeted interventions for great ape protection, infection risk research, and small ruminant pest control in cooperation with "Centre de Réhabilitation des Primates de LWIRO"
  • Supporting the decentralized implementation of the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) process in Maniema and South Kivu for commercial use of medicinal plants in accordance with the national ABS framework while supporting indigenous people in the correct use and marketing of selected medicinal plants
  • Supporting the development and implementation of an environmental education program to raise awareness and inform selected target groups on One Health issues e.g. infection risks, antimicrobial resistance, ABS, forest as pharmacy
  • Coordinating One Health activities with the other two project offices in Kindu and Kinshasa

Your profile

  • University degree in one of the following areas: Veterinary sciences, biology, zoology, or any related discipline
  • Several years of relevant professional experience in veterinarian sciences, coordinating “One Health” activities or monitoring zoonotic diseases in wildlife or livestock populations, preferably gained in developing or emerging countries, is an advantage
  • Professional experience in francophone Africa or regional experience in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Excellent intercultural and communication skills
  • Business fluent in English and French, knowledge of Swahili and/or German is a strong advantage
